Early Reading &Phonics
Reading is at the heart of our Early Years curriculum. Across our Early Years Unit, we carefully build the foundations children need to become confident and enthusiastic readers.
Throughout Nursery, children develop the foundations for reading through communication and language, listening and attention, stories, songs, rhymes, sound discrimination and playful opportunities to explore sounds.
During the Summer Term in Nursery, children begin their Read Write Inc. journey. This carefully builds upon the listening, language and sound-awareness skills developed throughout the year and supports a smooth progression into Reception.
In Reception, children continue their Read Write Inc. journey through systematic daily phonics teaching. Children are given regular opportunities to revisit, practise and apply their developing phonics knowledge within reading, writing and purposeful provision
.Alongside phonics, we place a strong emphasis on reading for pleasure, high-quality texts, storytelling and vocabulary development throughout Nursery and Reception.
